Following the Speed’s renovation and reopening in 2016, the Speed has built a model Advancement team that grown contributed revenue by 50% over a three-year period to support the operations of our larger campus.

As we approach the Speed’s Centennial in 2027, this position offers exciting opportunities for a successful candidate to shape the future of the Speed Art Museum. The Speed is undergoing an ambitious 6-acre plan for a landscaping project and ungated, unticketed outdoor sculpture park that allows the Speed to take its mission and programs outdoors by creating an art and nature-filled park on the corner of the University of Louisville campus.

As a senior member of the Advancement team, the Major Gifts Officer will develop, organize and cultivate donors and prospects who have the capacity to make significant multi-year investments. The Major Gifts Officer will manage planning, organizing, and events for several donor groups. The ideal candidate will be energetic and self-motivated with experience and success making direct solicitations, working with volunteers and staff across  the organization. The Major Gifts Officer creates compelling proposals, presentations, and materials to solicit and steward gifts. This position works closely with the Deputy Director, External Relations & Advancement and  the Director who will also maintain major donor portfolios. 



Requirements

Position Summary:

The Major Gifts Officer will assume a key leadership role within the Advancement department by advancing the mission of the Speed Art Museum through the expansion of funding from individuals. As a senior member of the Advancement team, the Major Gifts Officer will develop, organize and cultivate donors and prospects who have the capacity to make significant multi-year investments. The Major Gifts Officer will manage planning, organizing, and events for several donor groups. The ideal candidate will be energetic and self-motivated with experience and success making direct solicitations, working with volunteers and staff across the organization. The Major Gifts Officer creates compelling proposals, presentations, and materials to solicit and steward gifts. This position works closely with the Deputy Director, External Relations & Advancement and the Director who will also maintain major donor portfolios.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of 80-100 major gift donors and prospects
  • Collaborate with the Director, Deputy Director of External Relations & Advancement to determine the priorities for our major giving program annually.
  • Identify and select major gift prospects for cultivation.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
    - Initiate contacts with potential major gift donors
    - Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for prospects
    - Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
    - Make solicitations when appropriate
    - Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors
  • Grow and oversee a planned giving program that includes:
    - Building contacts with the trust-and-estate bar and among accountants and investment advisors who serve target donors. Developing marketing materials and a campaign to reach potential planned giving donors. Relaunching the Museum’s Legacy Society to convene, support and celebrate donors or planned gifts
  • Work with Advancement Operations Manager to track and cultivate donors and prospects, using the donor database, prospect management, and wealth screening software. Maintain accurate and timely records of donor contact, meetings, correspondence in the donor database.
  • Implement an effective major donor stewardship program, to include acknowledgement through private and public recognition.
  • Assist in developing proposals for capital campaigns, endowment campaigns and other campaigns, as needed.
  • Attend community events, meetings, or conferences to promote organizational goals or solicit donations or sponsorships
  • Perform other major donor activities as required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years successful experience in major gifts fundraising, development, or related work and a proven track record for securing major gifts through strategic relationship management
  • Mission-driven; passionate about the Speed Art Museum and related constituencies
  • Knowledge of the Speed Art Museum and key stakeholders is desirable but not essential

  • Computer skills- Comfortably and confidently uses specialized software including donor database. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Cooperativeness- Ability to reach out and build collegial relationships within the organization to promote cordial and productive interdepartmental connections for the team.

Work Environment

This job operates primarily in a professional office and museum environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. 

Physical Demands

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt position. This position is NOT eligible for overtime pay. Job requirements include frequent attendance at evening and weekend events at the Museum and elsewhere.
